I have just recently graduated with a BA (Hons) in Textiles and Surface design at Grays School of Art, Aberdeen (Scotland). I am a mixed media and textile artist currently living in Aberdeen. My work takes inspiration from the changing environment of Scottish coastal communities, in particular the island of St Kilda.

My childhood memories of the west coast inspired this interest. The island of St Kilda lies in Scotland's Outer Hebrides and is one of the most remote parts of the British Isles. Also known as the "edge of the world", it was evacuated in 1930 due to the communitys failing economy, bringing an end to a unique and extraordinary way of life. Isolated from the rest of society they were a self sufficient and adaptive people. A breeding ground to one of the largest colony's of gannets, the islanders used to feed upon the seabirds in order to survive.

The extraordinary life and unique plight of the St Kildans evoked a strong emotional response in me which I believe is conveyed in my art work. Through materials relevant to my theme I create unique textile art pieces that can be displayed equally well in a gallery space and in a home or business setting. Each piece is individually made using a mix of media that has a connection to St Kilda. The aim of each piece is to celebrate coastal communities like that of St Kilda. The result is textiles that are unique, precious and most importantly tell the story of a unique way of life.
