I recently sat down with award winning product designer Kevin Scott, to talk about his innovative bicycle design, which saw him win the New Designers Part 1 BDC runner up award at this years New Designers Exhibition. As part of his studies Kevin also spent time working with BMW in Munich, Germany.
Q1. Hi Kevin, What was your inspiration for the Bendable Bike?
My inspiration for the bike came really from a problem. Bike theft is a major issue in cities and for the general cyclist taking large locks and finding suitable areas to safely store bikes is a massive headache. The idea for the bendy bike is to incorporate everything you need to safely secure the bike into the actual design. The bend in the A-frame allows cyclists to wrap the bike around many objects that you can find anywhere around any city.
Q2. Have you had any interest from bike manufacturers to take the product further?
Currently no-one has approached me about making my prototype a reality, but im using my prize money from the new designers award to research more into the potential of the bike.
Q3. How did your time with BMW in Germany help develop you as a designer?
During my time in Germany I quickly learnt what was acceptable at University is a million miles away from what was expected in industry. This made me grow up as a designer and helped me realise the work ethic needed to thrive in such competitive industry.
Q4. What does the future hold for you and the Bendy Bike?
Ive had a lot of media interest about the bike so I want to see what type of contacts materialise from these opportunities, but most of all I am looking forward to getting back in the workshop and to keep improving the design of the bike.
